Math Matters: Building Number Sense

Math Matters

What is number sense?

Number sense does not develop simply by writing numbers, counting objects or memorizing math facts.  Number sense is developed over time as students begin to make real life connections to numbers and what they represent.  Number sense is a deep understanding of numbers that takes many years to develop.

Number sense begins to develop at a very young age.  Young children need many opportunities to work with numbers in a variety of ways.  They need to see the same number represented in a wide range of forms such as: written digits, number sets, tally marks, using objects, their fingers, etc.

By this time in the year most kindergarteners are able to show numbers in a few different ways.  Use this Valentine Number Book to give students some practice representing the numbers in 6 different ways.
